Don't Text & Drive!
A new law went into effect August 28, 2009 making it an offense for drivers age 21 and under to text and drive. It comes with it a $200 fine and points assessed. And it's unsafe!

The entire group of participants (students, teachers, principal, football players, FFA, FCCLA, basketball players!) at the press conference at South Shelby High School. Special thanks to Sgt. Brent Bernhardt with the MSHP, Senator Wes Shoemeyer, and Rep. Tom Shively for coming out and showing their support. Students painted the "Buckle Up" stencil on their parking lot during the press conference.
Kim Biondo, outreach coordinator for the NE Regional Blueprint Committee, set up a booth at the Rock for Hope Concert in Warrenton. Several people, like this young lady, stopped by to try out the fatal vision goggles. The purpose of the goggles is to give people the feeling of being impaired and notice how much their judgment is affected if they had a .07 blood alcohol content.

Kim Biondo, outreach coordinator for the NE Regional Blueprint Committee, set up a booth at the Pike County Memorial Hospital Kids Expo in Louisiana, MO.
Warren County R-3 students, Samantha, Kayla and Willy, along with their advisor, Denise, and MoDOT representatives Tana and Marisa, participated in the Seat Belt Rally held march 4 at the capitol.

Students of Marion County R-2 High School, along with advisors Marcia and Jenny, participated in the seat belt rally as well. The purpose of the rally was to encourage legislators to vote for HB665 which allows primary enforcement of Missouri's seat belt law. Passage of this law could result in saving 90 lives each year.

Hannibal 6th graders raced to Buckle Up during a Safe Kids events at the middle school. The purpose of the event was to encourage children under the age of 13, weighing less than 100 pounds, and less than 4' 9" in height to sit in the back of the vehicle. An airbag demonstration was provided by Poage Automotive Center.

The students and faculty at Knox County R-1 High School rose to the Battle of the Belt challenge in 2008; they were the regional winner in highest overall usage at 93.91% and most improved usage at 71.16% increase from the first seat belt check to the second. The students’ won two checks each in the amount of $250 for each of these categories. It was the first time the school participated in the challenge. District Engineer Paula Gough and Don McCurren from American Family Insurance presented Jane Moore and Cyndy Bliem-Sharp, Battle of the Belt student coordinators for the school, with two checks each in the amount of $250 for being the regional winner.

These cheerleaders took their Arrive Alive and Buckle Up cheer to the stands during one of the first home basketball games of the season. During the cheer, they threw out t-shirts that remind students to wear their seat belts.
Three Counties Team Up for Car Seat Checks
Lincoln, Montgomery and Marion Counties all provided certified child passenger technicians to check the installation of car seats and help parents learn how to properly buckle up their little ones. The event was held in Montgomery City in November. Email Julina Kirby (Marion County Health Department) , Lisa Sitler (Lincoln Co. Health Department) or Kathie Hoette (Montgomery Co. Health Department) to schedule a check up event in your area, or to learn more about becoming a certified child passenger technician.
